Simon and Stephen Close In 29th September 2008 Handy Motorsport drivers Stephen Treherne and Simon Belcher had another impressive outing in the Legends Cars Championship at Oulton Park this weekend. The Cheshire race track is one of the most challenging in the UK and, unlike the manufactured antiseptic circuits seen in Formula 1 these days, derives from the natural undulations and tricky cambers provided by roads in the park which once served the grounds of Oulton Hall. Legends race meetings consist of two heats where the grids are decided by ballot with a third race where the starting positions are based on points scored but with the top drivers at the back. This format is designed to promote overtaking and ensure that the trophy winners really do earn their awards. Once again Simon and Stephen had top produce consistent results to ensure they would keep pace with the leaders in the championship table. In actual fact they both gained on their rivals. Simon's three race results were 3rd, 6th and 5th which secured 4th on the day whilst his more experienced team mate, Stephen, was only a handful of points ahead in 3rd. "It was a good day's work," says Simon. "I was 7th and 275 points off 4th place in the table going into this weekend and have come out only 195 points off that place and only 5 points off Peter (Morton - the reigning World Masters Champion) who is currently sixth." "Things are definitely closing up and the remaining two dates are on circuits I like and where we usually do well. Both the meetings are Truck Racing Festivals as well which means we will be racing in front of some of the biggest crowds of the year - all the better for the run-in to the close of the season. Pembrey in Wales is the first one in a couple of weeks time. It's the biggest car racing meeting of the whole year in Wales and the fans will be out in very large numbers." |
