31st March 2009

The Wlitshire based Handy Motorsport Team started the season in the 1st & 2nd rounds of the 2009 Legends Cars Championship with a successful weekend at Brands Hatch. It was business as usual in the Legends class with four heats & two finals that were packed with the usual ‘Legends’ nose to tail action.

During Saturday’s races and preparations the team had been hampered by the weather, with four seasons in one day.

In the first heat driver Simon Belcher not only had to contend with the weather but also with oil, with both cars starting from the middle of the grid it was not long before both drivers were into a good rhythm, Simon had set what was to be the fastest lap of the race and the team were heading for two cars in the top three, when Simon’s car hit a patch of oil that had been spilt on the entry into Paddock Hill bend. A 360˚ high speed spin ended in the gravel trap. With Simons race over it was left to Stephen to restore some pride to the team, which he did with second position after finishing just 1.47 seconds behind 2008 Legends Cars Champion John ‘Jon’ Higgins.

Putting the 1st heats problems aside the team was rewarded with 2nd & 5th in the 2nd heat before going on to 4th & 5th in the final.

Sunday saw better weather with some very encouraging results, despite Stephen’s DNF in the 2nd heat, the 1st & 3rd in the final was an amazing result, both drivers took their opportunities on the final lap, Stephen Treherne passed John Higgins and Simon squeezed past Lawrence Davey on the line, in exactly the same place that he had to win the final race of The 2008 Legends Cars Championship.

With the first 2 rounds of the 2009 championship being completed Stephen Treherne (No12) and Simon Belcher are in 4th & 5th respectively in the championship standings.

Mark Moseley from Team Sponsor “Karcher UK” following the final said: "The drivers & cars look great in the new race suits, helmets and livery, What a great day's racing with an amazing result in the final."
