2009
Legends Cars Championship - Round 5, Cadwell Park 31st May 2009
For
round 5 of The 2009 Legends Cars Championship the venue was Cadwell Park
in The Lincolnshire Wolds, The circuit is affectionately nicknamed “The
Mini-Nurburgring” with it’s blind apexes, blind summits and
sharp
changes in both gradient & camber it
is one of the most exciting and dramatic circuits in the UK and a
real challenge for
Kärcher Handy Motorsport
drivers #11 Simon Belcher and #12 Stephen Treherne.
What
a contrast it would be to the teams eventful journey to Mondello Park,
The first major difference was the weather, It was Sunday morning, It
was dry, sunny and hot, the team were certainly not used to this.
Warm-Up
It
was the drivers first opportunity to familiarise themselves with the
very demanding Cadwell Park circuit. Stephen was to be the quickest
ending the session just over 0.5 second behind the quickest man, in form
Lee Fitzpatrick. Simon worked his way through the field before finishing
the session 5th fastest. The scene was set for a very
demanding day on both the drivers and their cars alike.
A
nice piece of Cadwell 1-2 …
Round 5 Heat 1
Stephen made an
excellent start from the 3rd row of the grid, taking the lead
by the end of the first lap from John ‘Jon’ Higgins, in a ding dong
battle that would last all race long, swapping 1st & 2nd
position several times. Simon had to be more patient from his 5th
row start alongside local driver Richard Pocklington from Louth, he made
good progress in the first couple of laps, but with the car not coming
to him in the second half of the race had to settle for 5th.
Stephen’s battle at the front with John Jon ended with 2nd
place just 0.569s behind the current championship leader.
Round 5 Heat 2
Both Simon &
Stephen made excellent starts to the race lying in 2nd & 3rd
for the first couple of laps, Stephen eventually found a way round Simon
who was struggling for pace and set of in chase of in form Lee
Fitzpatrick, For Simon it was then a race long battle with Lawrence
Davey until Lawrence went off the track on the last lap, With Stephen
eventually finishing 2nd again this time 0.585s behind car #2
Fitzpatrick, Simon came home in a hard fought and well deserved 4th
place.
Round 5 Final
Both Simon and
Stephen started way down the grid on rows 5 & 7, With both drivers
making steady progress through the field before they had their own
battle on the last 2 laps with Simon taking 3rd position just
0.069s in front of Stephen. With Simon making some good ground on his
closest competitors in the championship, Another fun packed day of
Legends racing was over …
