2010 Legends Cars Championship -
Round 5, Mallory Park 13th June 2010
Mallory Park in Leicestershire affectionately known as “The Friendly Circuit” is the venue for the 5th Round of The 2010 CPC Legends Cars National Championship. Another full grid of 28 cars will line up with not only 5 former Legends champions, but also triple British Rally Champion Mark Higgins. The circuit is a favourite with spectators but not with every driver probably due to Shaw's Hairpin, the tightest corner on any UK tracks. Last year’s round at this circuit was good for the team, let’s hope that good fortune continues today.
Warm Up
The warm up was a great opportunity for the 2 Handy Motorsport drivers to reacquaint themselves with the 1.35 mile (2.173 km) circuit. It didn’t take them long to find some pace, Stephen in his #12 car set his fastest lap on his 5th of 14 warm-up laps with a 54.882 lap. Simon in the meantime was setting his own quick lap with a 55.242 lap. The pair were 2nd & 4th fastest respectively.
Round 5 Heat 1
The ball draw was not too kind to the team, with Stephen & Simon having to line up on the back row of main pack, with only 3 rookie cars behind them.
However, the worst was yet to come with the race being red flagged after 5 laps behind the safety car, following a multiple car incident at Gerrard’s on the first lap. The cars had to reform on the grid in the positions they were in when the race begun. Sadly this meant that all of the hard work both drivers had done to move through the pack had been undone. The race restarted but only a 4 lap dash lay ahead, not to be deterred both Stephen & Simon put in some crazy manoeuvres before finishing with #11 Simon in 7th & #12 Stephen in 8th.

Round 5 Heat 2
With Simon’s pole position start & Stephen starting from the outside of the 2nd row, it was all set for a cracking race and what was to follow did not disappoint. Simon had a clear lead by the time the car exited Gerrard’s, only to brake a little too late going into the Esses which put him on the grass, allowed Stephen to take the lead and when Simon rejoined the race he was in 10th place. The next 3 laps saw Stephen pull away from “Triple British Rally Champion” Mark Higgins at the front & Simon who was not going to be outdone, showing great pace, setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 2 with a 54.818 second lap and by the end of lap 5 he had got himself into 2nd place. Not even another appearance of the safety car could deny the team their first ever Karcher Handy Motorsport 1-2.
Round 5 Final
Once again the rain would play it’s part in a Legends race, with the last 4 laps of the race the cars were racing on a wet track with dry tyres, not a good combination. This time it was Stephen’s turn to record the races fastest lap on his 2nd lap with a time 55.375 seconds. Simon was again right on the pace before taking a 360˚ spin on lap 9. The race was completed in torrential rain with Stephen bringing the #12 car back in 4th, despite Simon’s 360 he finished in 14th position.
