2011 Legends Cars Championship - Rounds 5 & 6, Silverstone

7th/8th May 2011

This weekend Silverstone ‘Home of the British Formula 1 GP’ plays host for rounds 5 & 6 of The 2011 National Legends Cars Championship, the cars will be racing on The National Circuit, it is the 2nd shortest of Silverstone’s 5 different race configurations, but that doesn't mean it lacks racing heritage, as It will play home to the final round of this year’s British Touring Car Championship.

Stephen is currently leading the championship with 2040 points with Simon in 4th place on 1635 points. However, there is a long way to go and an awful lot of points to be won or lost.

Round 5 Warm-Up
Well as you all know it had to happen sooner or later, for this morning’s warm-up it was wet, wet, wet  track… A torrential downpour greeted the drivers as they went out on to the track for today’s warm-up.

Stephen All Strapped In And Ready To Go …

Round 5 Heat 1
A 4th row start for Simon & a 6th row start for Stephen, both made a clean start. For Simon it was a case seeing what he could get from the race as he was not happy with the set up of the car, he was struggling to find both drive and grip, when you are in any race car you have to feel confident that the car will go where you put it, Simon was not confident and had to accept 10th place. In complete contrast, Stephen felt very comfortable with his car and it showed when he took the lead on the 3rd lap, and stayed in that position when they passed the chequered flag 3 laps later, finishing nearly a second in front of last years champion #1 Davey.

Round 5 Heat 2
A better race for Simon, he was still not 100% happy with the cars set-up, but definitely a little more confident. For Stephen it was a case of getting through the pack if he could, he managed that and got his second win in as many races. Simon had a hard fought battle with #32 Morton who crossed the line just 0.095 of a second ahead of Simon who finished in 7th place.

Round 5 Final
Stephen would have his work cut out in this one starting from the back of the grid, for Simon the task may be slightly easier as he was starting from the 6th row. Both drivers got away nice and cleanly, with both of them on the pace and running in the top 5, it all looked good until the 6th lap when Simon had just taken 4th spot and disaster struck, his engine blew up as he came onto Pit Straight, race over and a very expensive DNF. Meanwhile Stephen had got to the front and by staying had a perfect day scoring a maximum 600 points. Top spot on the overall podium for the day was his yet again.

Round 6 Heat 1
As their was no warm-up for Legends today it was straight into the action. A good clean start for both drivers was how it appeared, but that’s not quite how the stewards saw it. Stephen was starting from the front row, so it will come as no surprise if I tell you he lead the race coming out of the first bend, he made good his clean getaway and had the front all to himself for the first half of the race, which was not how it was for the second half of the race. The lead changed hands a couple of times with both #16 & #4 taking their turns at the front, Stephen was having none of it and retook the lead at the end of lap 5 & crossed the line in 1st place for the fourth time this weekend. Now I have to tell you Simon had a superb drive getting the #11 car from 20th on the grid to 6th place on the track, only to be given a 20 second penalty for moving out of line as they crossed the start line. Simon moved out of line to avoid hitting the car in front of him, it seems harsh that you can be penalised for avoiding an accident but that’s motor racing I suppose.

The Cars Have New Livery For The 2011 Championship …

Round 6 Heat 2
In reverse to the first heat Simon was going off the front row & Stephen was going off the back row. Simon lead into the first corner and held the lead into the second lap but when drivers work together it is difficult to keep them behind you, as when they bump draught 2 Legends cars are quicker than 1, before long he was joined in the top by Stephen who had made steady progress through the field, Stephen then went on to the front only to be passed on more than one occasion by #7 Brace & #1 Davey who looked like they were driving together to stop Stephen making it 5 in a row. It was a 3rd for Stephen and a 5th for Simon.

Round 6 Final
The result for this race has yet to be confirmed by the stewards as it is under investigation.
